An endearing encounter : O mere sona re..

Film : Teesri Manzil
Singers : Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi
Composer : Rahul Dev Burman
Lyricist : Majrooh Sultanpuri

I can totally understand the level of nervousness that 27 years old composer might be feeling while giving an audition test to one of the leading most stars of 60s who had very exuberant and exacting choices and quite an extensive and thoroughgoing knowledge as far as music is concerned. The guy with thick black rimmed glasses had yet to find his feet in main stream movies even after giving music in total 4movies during 5 last years. And perhaps that's why he might have thought to start with a secure tune which was already adored by a large mass.
As soon as he started singing starting notes..
Taraa raa..... ta rarara...
the examiner completed the whole mukhda by singing, "Deotara mattali oina... joon pani jhari diula..'. , and said, okay, I'm giving this Nepali folk tune to Jaikishan. Do you have anything of your own?"

Fusss...

The sentence acted like a needle, the balloon of confidence got punctured and before getting it totally deflated Pancham got out of the room and tried to refill some air inside by puffing couple of cigarettes. After gathering himself he came again to the legendary Shammi Kapoor and started with an another tune which was very much of his own..
O mere sona re. sona re.. sona re...
Ah... It went on...
Then the came the another one...
Aa ja aa ja...
O haseena zulfon wali...

Here, the enamoured listener stopped him quite abruptly! "Stop!!! I don't want to listen anything anymore. You are my music director."
And rest is the history.
Yes. Pancham - R D Burman was the music director for Shammi Kapoor - not only for Teesari Manzil but also for both the movies Manoranjan (1974) and Bundle Bazz (1976) when Shammi Kapoor ventured into direction.

Teesri Manzil..
Pancham not only created a history with this great, significant hit but also quite supremely and strikingly changed the trends of HFM like never before!!!!
Total 6 mind blowing tracks including 2 solos and 4 duets having all Rafi sahab and Ashaji's voices. And today comes the cutest, sweetest and one of the prettiest lilt in my mind since morning wherein Rafi sahab joins Asha ji only in last stanza.

I always wonder how much 'inner' strength and force this delicate looking Gujju Ben must be having that she holds this heavy Punjabi hand with just her single hand, gives a jerk and makes him fall down with quite an ease in no time!!!
Shammiiii Kapoor falls down here, so now that 'thud' on bongo was inevitable. Pancham makes violins screeching on behalf of poor hero - cheated, hit and pained. And just after that his wicked, naughty but pretty girl friend tries to cover it up with help of three legends - Pancham, Majrooh and Ashaji in utterly melodious and irrisitable way..

O mere sona re Sona re sona re..
De dungi jaan juda mat hona re..
Maine tujhe zara der main jaana..
Huva kusoor khafa mat hona re..

Interlude is as playful as Asha on screen and Asha in your head phones. Pancham's signature bass is giving it a classic vintage zeal and flute provides here a fresh breezy feel as the song is picturised on lushly green hills. Both merged in each other create a mesmerising allure. Those screeching violins keep on yelling on behalf of her hero - annoyed - at least to show it up.
How beautifully she connvinces him in first stanza that no matter what, she is and will be always always with him all the way!!

O meri baahon se nikal ke..
Tu agar mere raste se hat jayega..
To laharake.. ho balkha ke..
Mera saya tere tan se lipat jayega.
Tum chhudaao... Laakh daaman
Chhodte hain.. kab yeh armaan..
Ki main bhi saath rahungi rahoge jahaan
..💗💕

In second interlude, violins are beautifully mingled with bass. And here accordion which remained fainted since first stanza, comes in front force as if to watch Asha parekh dancing (playing hinch actually 🤪) unlike our hurt hero who is hiding himself behind bushes (🫣🧐) enjoying how his beloved is sweating out to please him. Tweeting flute sounds very cute here..
and errrrr..
caught.!
Hero, of course!

Majrooh was indeed a master wordsmith while writing kittenish repartee whenever situation demanded and here is an endearing example of the same :
O miyan humse na chhipaao..
Woh banavat ki saree adaayen liye..
Ki tum is pe ho itraate..
Ki main pichhe hun sau iltzaayen liye..
Ji main khush hoon.. mere sona..
Jhooth hai kya.. sach kahona..
Ki main bhi saath rahungi rahoge jahaan..

Now, here first interlude repeates itself for showing same playfulness with some cute lovely moments on screen and here it invites Rafi sahab to give an amusing conclusion to the song.
After all hero (of a vintage Hindi film) sings here - first annoyed, then immensely flattered and now flat. 😄😄.
But showing some attitude is must..😎😁

O phir humse na uljhna..
Nahin lat aur uljhan mein pad jaayegi..
O pachhataaogi kuchh aise..
Ki yeh surkhi labon ki utar jaayehi..
Yeh sazaa tum.. bhool n jaana..
Pyaar ko thokar mat lagaana.
Ki chala jaauga phir main na jaane kahaan..

You know, it's always a treat to watch Shammi Kapur dancing in his own unique style. Vijay Anand has made this song too quite cherishable what he is the best at. Song fades out with lovely sounds of flutes and violins loosing themselves to the hills just like these two lovebirds.
I am loving it. 💕
Absolutely.☺
