Tumne mujhe dekha.. ho kar maherbaan..

Love, longing and quench.

Song : Tumne mujhe dekha...
Movie : Teesri Manzil.
Singer : Mohammad Rafi.
Composer : R. D. Burman.
Lyricist : Majrooh Sultanpuri.

His ways are amazing! You sometimes get something you never dreamt of. It comes in your lap in quite an unexpected way. And perhaps it is far, far greater than the things you have ever prayed or sweated for. You actually never know what's actually meant for you. Who's made for you. And whether there's a certain path that's awaiting you to walk upon, even if it's absolutely unknown.  Sometimes you don't choose the path. The path itself chooses you. And that's we call destiny.

You know, like we mortals, every film, projects, artists or characters too have their own destiny. So perhaps that absolutely unexpected rift between two of most gentle and generous souls of film fraternity was destined. Yeah, Dev Anand and Nassir Hussain. God only knows what made Dev Anand say that the film which Nassir is making with me is a coloured film and he has given Goldie - Vijay Aanand - a black and white film to make with a new boy Rajesh Khanna. The incident happened in a grand party arranged to celebrate the occasion of film actress Sadhana's engagement ceremony and almost entire film industry was present there. Something hit to the core and many a things were changed overnight. Goldie was told to direct Teesri Manzil - the coloured film. 'Rocky' the hero of the film got a different face and charm.
'Baharon ke sapne' and Rajesh Khanna got Nasir Hussain to direct them otherwise it would have been interesting to watch a song like "kya jaanu sajan..." directed by Goldie.

But Goldie got to direct total six smashing hit songs from the same music director who had also composed for Baharon Ke sapne. R. D. Burman. Four duets and two solos. I love love love this song directed by Vijay Anand for just everything it holds. Perhaps this song took the longest to get completed. Yeah. They started shooting the song on a grand, expensive set and suddenly Shammi Kapoor received the news that his wife Geeta Bali, who was shooting for some film in Punjab, got smallpox. He cancelled shooting at once, rushed there, but Geeta Bali couldn't be saved. Weeks passed, months passed and Nassir Hussain waited and waited for Shammi Kapoor to get recover from his pain and come back to work keeping that expensive set intact. He was Goldie who convinced and bring back Shammi Kapoor to work saying they will continue shooting only if he is comfortable.

And again they started shooting one of most soul-stirring songs ever composed by R D Burman, ever written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and ever sung by Mohammed Rafi.
Rocky - the hero was all eyes waiting for his love to come that evening after confessing just everything in a letter written to her - Surekha - Asha Parekh with utmost honesty. Now, if she comes, means he is trusted. It's now or never situation for his seeking and sinking heart.
And she comes...
Yeah.. she comes..
What a start!! What a curtain rising with those astounding drums!! What was that? Rocky's signature passion?
Well.. IMO,  By playing his drums in such a breathtaking way, that man pours all his heart out as drums is the language he knows, feels and lives. And so, for composer, what could be the better option to make his emotions flow? For long, bearing all those false allegations and carrying kind of guilt for the mistake he had never done, today, Rocky actually drums out that fear of being misunderstood, rejected or also hated by the one he loves the most. He throws off the mask he has been wearing since long. Today, he is relieved.. He comes to know that he is finally trusted and accepted by the one who is the entire world for him. Can you imagine how grateful he could be! The feel is numbing. And Pancham helps him to clear his choked throat through his drums. Pancham makes the way for the words to come from his pounding heart through his drums.

Drum stops and flow in haunting notes on alto-sax supported by fainted violins.. poignant.. Composer sets the mood of the song in no time! Rhythm starts just along with the lyrics. Rafi Sahab breaks in. His voice sounds so moving throughout.
It can't get better than the way Majrooh has worded  in his fourth persistent film with Nassir Hussain.

Tumne mujhe dekha..
ho kar meherbaan..
Ruk gai yeh zameen..
tham gaya aasmaan.
Janeman..

And here come those two sublime notes on piano to add utmost beauty to the song.
uffff.....
Can anyone explain what that holds? Are they two short breaths of relief taken by a man who has been spending restless nights since long.. too long..?  or two drops of tears held forcibly in his eyes only and now are urging to flow down?
Nah.. perhaps more than that.

If I would say that two notes on piano and then transicord is the real pulse of this song then it would be complete injustice to that awesome violins accompanying it in first interlude and that heart-stirring flutes and violins again in second interlude. Violins constantly support vocal intensifying the feel like anything.
One of the most wonderful things in the song is those brilliant detours taken in stanzas. It starts with quite an odd note! Rafi Sahab's voice is lifted by giving it a little echo. Majrooh's pen mounts higher piercing with each of the words.
Notes ascend and so does the feel.
Air gets thinner..

"O.. kahin dard ke sehra mein..
rukte chalte hote..
In hothon ki hasrat mein..
tapate jalate hote.."
Then..??
Ah..
"Meherbaan.. ho gai..
zulf ki badliyaan.."

Now this line holds magic in itself. The magic carries you up to the peak and somehow quite soon you feel that you are back right there where you get your breaths  back..
to "janeman.. janejaan..."!
Pancham was a master craftsman. Any doubts after listening this?

In second interlude how brilliantly Goldie - the master song-director tries to give hints of the misfortune, the darkness which is about to follow. Aghast, she's now mangling, crushing the letter. And due to that, the candles (of hope) fall down. It's dark now.. fire of love is extinguished by the tears falling down from her eyes welling out anger and pain.. what's left is smoke.. and you find poor Rocky standing behind that mist, completely unaware of that cruel game played with him by Ruby - Helen or say, destiny.
He is happy. Gathers, gets the courage back and comes closer to his love. Perhaps remembering the good old days, those cute, lovey-dovey fights and the way that used to end.

Yeh saza tum.. bhool n jaana...
Pyaar ko thokar mat lagaana..
Ke chala jaunga phir main
na jaane kahaan..

And poor guy thinks that now again he can say something like..

O... lekar yeh haseen jalwe..
Tum bhi na kahaan pahunche..
aakhir to mere dil tak..
Kadamon ke nishaan pahunche..
Khatm se.. ho gaye..
raste sab yahaan..
Janeman...
Jaan e jaan..

In spite of being un utter favourite, for long I avoided to describe this song. Sometimes several things are meant to feel only. They touch your deepest core and you know that it's next to impossible to word what is felt there. This song, for me, falls in same category. By the lyrics, this is the song of gratitude or say gratification. Still, while and after listening this, why my eyes get wet everytime is yet to discover.
